WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS

As well as creating a series of documentaries the project has also highlighted the importance of film heritage through workshops and events.

Classic Film Screenings

To celebrate some of the memories recorded by the project a series of classic film screenings were held at Exeter Phoenix’s independent cinema, Studio 74, with films based on the memories recorded for the documentaries.

School Workshops & Projection Project

A number of workshops were also run to give young people an opportunity to engage with the city’s cinema heritage by exploring archive material. With project partners Into Film we delivered archive and heritage workshops to local school children, and got them to document the role of cinema in their lives. The Exeter Cinema Heritage Project also worked with Freefall, Exeter Phoenix’s youth arts group, to create an exciting video projection combining documentary and archive material which was shown in the city centre, at Positive Light Projects.

Exeter Cinema Heritage Project Premiere

The Exeter Cinema Heritage Project films were premiered at Exeter Phoenix's very own independent cinema, Studio 74, on Friday 22nd July 2022. All eleven short films were shown, each covering a different aspect of Exeter's cinema history, from Saturday Morning Picture clubs to the closing of the ABC Cinema. Among the audience were many of the film's participants, their friends and family, who all came to celebrate the launch of the films.
